Tim Finin

University of Maryland, Baltimore County

Tim Finin is a Professor of Computer Science and ElectricalEngineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County(UMBC). He has over 30 years of experience in the applications ofArtificial Intelligence to problems in information systems and iscurrently working on the theory and applications of intelligentsoftware agents, the semantic web, and mobile computing. Heholds degrees from MIT and the University of Illinois. Prior tojoining the UMBC, he held positions at Unisys, the University ofPennsylvania, and the MIT AI Laboratory. Finin is the author ofover 240 refereed publications and has received research grantsand contracts from a variety of sources. He has been anorganizer of several major conferences, including the IEEEConference on Artificial Intelligence for Applications, The ACMConference on Information and Knowledge Management, ACMAutonomous Agents conference and the ACM Conference on Mobile andUbiquitous Computing. He is cureently on the editorial board ofseveral journals and is an editor in chief of the Journal of WebSemantics. Finin is a former AAAI councilor and on the the boardof directors of the Computing Research Association.

Software agents will need specialized search engines to find relevant and trustworthy knowledge on the Semantic Web. We discuss the underlying requirements and OWL and present Swoogle, a crawler-based indexing and retrieval engine for RDF documents.
