Canvas, SVG, and More: Rich Graphics Capabilities For Web Applications

Vladimir Vukićević (Mozilla Corporation)
Browser technology Foyer Room

SVG and the ‘canvas’ HTML element, previewed at XTech 2005 and shipped in Firefox 1.5, allow modern web applications to incorporate rich graphical capabilities without dependencies on closed formats or proprietary runtimes. These technologies are complementary; there is room for both in web applications and web content. This paper will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each, focusing chiefly on the Mozilla Firefox 1.5 implementation. This presentation will showcase examples of successful integration of SVG and canvas into real-world web content, and also include an early look at experimental Mozilla plans to expose 3D rendering capabilities to content authors.
