Improving the Browser Feed Experience for Users and Developers

Robert Sayre (IconNicholson)
Browser technology Foyer Room

This presentation will discuss improvements in browser handling of syndication feeds (Atom/RSS), and cover strategies for better integration with helper applications and online services.

Syndication feeds require new content-handling strategies, APIs, and XML infrastruture in the browser. In most browsers, users face an unpleasant experience when a feed is encountered in the browser. The versatile nature of RSS and Atom feeds means that users would often like to route feeds to a variety of applications and online services, rather than a single designated handler.

Syndication developers usually rely on a well-tested HTML rendering component such as Mozilla Gecko, MSHTML, or Apple WebKit. This presentation will cover common platform strategies for feed handling, how the feed facilities are moving down the stack, and how they free developers to write application code, instead of writing ad-hoc feed parsers.
